SLIT DRAINAGE -
The principle behind the system
To understand the principles behind the Slit Drainage technique, it is useful to be familiar with certain phenomena associated with the movement of water in soils. These phenomena are a major cause of many drainage problems encountered in Golf and Sportsturf management.
In effect, Slit Drainage bypasses these forces by channeling surface runoff through drainage slits cut directly into the ground and filled with drainage material. Water doesn't need to percolate through the soil in order to be evacuated by the underground drainage pipe system.
The next few pages will illustrate some of these forces affecting water movement in soils and how Slit Drainage works to bypass them.
